Good L@RD! Hectic holiday wind-up and lead up to the day of all days. Threw my
back for a loop moving a clients closet into place, truck blew up as we pulled
up to our home Christmas Eve, work's been crazy busy with the preparation of
events. Got the B&N Nook for my beautiful wife only to realize that I had
thrown out our old wireless router leaving the poor, cute little Nook useless.
Also found out that the laptop en route from my father would be ordered late,
making me also realize that buying a NEW router would be pushed back to make
sure everything connected right with new laptop. YES, so here I sit, December
25th, 2010. Grateful as ever to the G*ds and G*desses of my world, bringing me
and my family home safe and sound was the best Christmas present ever.
I've been thinking. That in itself is a big problem for me. Thinking. I was at a
Burbank Chamber of Commerce mixer last week and a friend whom I had invited as
a guest came. Sh was referred to me by a mutual friend because she wants to
start a business and our mutual friend suggested that she talk to me because I
have managed to create something that some people think is impressive. To me
it's no big deal, and nothing compared to where I see myself in the future, but
for sure I can acknowledge tremendous progress in my career and in building
what I am working at every minute of every day, waking and sleeping. People do
this with me. About once per month, sometimes more someone asks me to sit with
them and talk with them about what I do and how I do it etc... Of course I am
flattered and I am only too happy to do it. In fact I need to be doing that. I
need to be calling on people who are at least on some level where I would like
to be in the future and invite them out to lunch. Ask them questions just like
people do with me. This is actually suggested in a book I am reading by Jack
Canfield called "The Power Of Focus: What The World's Greatest Achievers Know

Okay, so it's not a real monster. It's my business, my pride and joy.
This adventure that I've put myself and my wife into, onto, and through for the
last 2 years. Funny thing is, it all began after we had lost everything,
literally sold all of our possessions, and vowed to move
back East, with nothing. I asked myself, if I could do one thing, everyday, and
make it a job, what would it be? I didn't think for too long, rather I took the
initiative and helped someone. In all honesty, it was just
my wife and I, our truck, and our hands. We were task masters. We helped a
close friend of ours, and then it snowballed. She told her friend, and then
they told their friends, and so on. By the second month of "operation", we had
10 clients. Here we are 2 years later, and we're trucking along. My latest
question to myself, and I'm grateful to be asking it, is; when is the
workload enough to get employees, not to hire "friends", but to give someone
under OR unemployed the chance to regain their strength in the
workforce. I know I can get more work, I know that if I took on a few
"helpers", I could suffice them with enough work to give...... [ Read the rest of this story ]
So today I was sitting at my daughter's swim lesson at the YMCA and I had my
notebook in hand. I sat there daydreaming of what could be, what has been, and
what will be in the future. I really got deep into it about five minutes
in.
I am building my future each and every
day.
For instance one of the notes I made was in regards to the future of my
business, The Domestic Assistants. What the hell did I
want to do with it? Where was I going with it in the beginning? Had I strayed
far off the course, or stayed in the direction I originally set forth? Even
deeper into it, was my work ethic. What did I really want to do with my time?
How could I benefit from changes made?
...... [ Read the rest of this story ]So there I sat.
One of the "problems" I had was one home in particular. A large
home well worth the time and effort it took to clean, but not my #1 choice in
"what to do today"..... This was a client whom we had just picked up within the
last 3 or 4 months. Anyhow, I was thinking of telling her we had to st
So we've been working with one of our best clients exclusively for over 2 weeks
now. By that I mean, this one client has seen more of us than our child has.
We're at her house from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. At the end
of last week, she took initiative and asked us what we'd like to get paid on a
week by week basis. Basically she's stating that she wants to hire us on as her
full time assistants, again...(I'll explain later) and by
doing so she'd like to have us with her as many days as possible. I took the
hint, gave her a ballpark price for the week, and here we are. Here's my
pickle....
Remember the month of August? Yeah well, that's come and gone. That was a
great month. We got inundated with work, got our business license, and the
"fictitious business name" all taken care of. My only qualm with then and
now is that all that hard work hasn't really seen the light of day. I don't
know where the business license went? I don't know if the business name went
through to the city? I didn't really get any return from the hard work I did.
Anyhow, main point being, that was a pretty mute month.
So this c

I'm excited because I am set up for success. Getting to bed early tonight so I
can get up and get to the gym in the morning. 4am wake-up call.
This week I learned that it is always better if I wait to react. Given enough time I can always think through what the right reaction is. then I am reacting from a place of being productive instead of reacting based on emotions. Usually the best approach is to NOT take anything too seriously - ESPECIALLY criticism. In fact if I can respond to criticism with something funny it takes all of the power out of the criticism because it sends the message very directly and clearly that I don't actually care about the criticism - that it doesn't bother me. Moreover if it did bother me at first, it won't after I properly make light of it. It's easy to discredit criticism with humor because usually if someone is criticizing it means they are not themselves in any way improving upon it because if they could human instinct dictates that they would. So the criticism is a reflection (usually) of a person's inability to understand it, which in turn suggests that...... [ Read the rest of this story ]

I picture it like, "A man's best friend..."
Ever since obtaining my beautiful 1997 Chevy Suburban at the beginning of
2009, it's been a love/hate relationship. It came to me with "issues", after
being in my parents' possession since purchase. When I got it, I was shocked. I
had just given my previous truck, a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac back to Ford
in a "voluntary repossession", I was assed-out, nothing to go on. BOOM! My life
flipped upside down. A huge burden was lifted off my head. Sure it's got a 40
gallon fish/gas tank, and the repairs are probably worth more than the KBB
value, but it's mine. I fix it, I drive it, and I don't have to give one more
cent to those greedy bastards at Ford Motor Credit.
Anyhow, this blog post comes from my experiences today. I drove all
day. Well, not ALL DAY, but a bunch. I came to rest this afternoon at my
local Vons grocery store, to get stuff for dinner. I got out with everything I
needed, hopped in the car, and zilch. I mean
nothing. No click, no vroooooom, nothing. First response, call
AAA. (If you don't have it, get it.

to agree with him!
If you can, GET this video. It is expensive but it is the most powerful 20 minutes you will ever spend - I can almost guarantee it. Make all of your employees and colleagues watch it. They teach you to operate from 4 basic principles. Choose, Play, Be There, Make Their Day.

So I don't know what
you'd call my line of work. Everything I do, I do differently for each client.
I don't have a set plan when a potential client calls. I have no idea how I'll
react. I may throw my heart into it, and want to spend every waking hour with
them. I might dread the day that I go back to their home, and call to cancel
for the most obscene reasons. This week was a true example of what I mean. It
began as it always does, Monday. This week was "special" due to a vacation week
from school for my daughter. We'd usually find a baby sitter for the days we'd
work, and life would be good. However, a babysitter was not needed.
The work week was thin, a
client Wednesday, another Thursday, and the rest open. We started out Monday
with the client who we go to when there's nobody else planned. She'd take us
every minute of every day if she could. We worked a full day, taking Mia with
us (as usual for this particular client), and planned for Tuesday as
well.
Tuesday same thing, worked
a full day, came home. (I usually give our scheduled clients a call the night
before ou
